A major transformation of the finance function has taken place during the first decade of this millennium. Modern financial management is now at the core of the business it serves. Process automation has been fundamental in this development, with the role of finance having changed from a support function to an integral part of business operations. Many companies—especially larger ones and particularly in the Nordic countries—have now automated a major part of their critical processes. But there have been setbacks, caused for example by new regulatory requirements following financial crises. The focus has moved away from improving efficiency to complying with new rules and legislation. Progress has not been as straightforward as might have been expected at the turn of the millennium.
