Efima selected as Outokumpu’s partner for developing the Microsoft Sustainability Manager solution

Outokumpu is accelerating the green transition as a global leader in low-emission stainless steel. The company’s business is based on circular economy principles. 95% of the raw materials used in Outokumpu’s production come from recycled steel scrap, and the company’s total carbon footprint is up to 75% lower than the global industry average*. Sustainability data plays a crucial role in the business: it consists of extensive and fragmented data flows, and combining and utilizing this data is essential for both successful business operations and regulatory-compliant reporting.

Outokumpu has implemented the Microsoft Sustainability Manager solution, which enables the collection, analysis, and reporting of sustainability data, as well as the tracking of sustainability goals. Following the implementation, the company sought a partner for maintaining and further developing the solution. Efima was selected for its expertise that combines technological know-how and integration capabilities with a deep understanding of sustainability data, information management, and the use of artificial intelligence.

“Efima’s expertise and comprehensive approach to developing sustainability data convinced us. In our partner selection, we placed particular emphasis on the ability to understand the significance of our sustainability goals and the expertise to support their implementation through information management, technological solutions, and reporting. I look forward to seeing how our collaboration advances this important area,” says Ernesto Hartikainen, Head of Sustainability Reporting Process at Outokumpu.

“Outokumpu is a forerunner in sustainability, and we are proud to support their efforts. When the goal is to leverage sustainability data in business, traditional technology partnerships alone are not enough. The collaboration also requires multidisciplinary expertise in sustainability, information management, and processes – all of which Efima brings together under one roof,” says Johanna Grönroos, Chief Business Officer at Efima.

*Outokumpu’s average product carbon footprint (2024): 1.6 kg CO₂e per kg of stainless steel based on lifecycle assessment. Global average carbon footprint of stainless steel (2024): 7 kg CO₂e per kg of stainless steel. (Outokumpu’s calculation based on data provided by CRU, worldstainless, and Kobolde & Partners AB)
